Stand with Principal Garmon
After over a decade of service to Broadway Elementary, Principal Garmon is now facing removal by LAUSD. We believe this decision is unjust, short-sighted, and damaging to our school community.
A PROVEN LEADER AT BROADWAY ELEMENTARY
Principal Garmon has dedicated her career to LAUSD since 2003, and over 10 years to Broadway Elementary—first as a 3rd grade teacher, then as an administrator, and finally as principal. She worked closely with former Principal Susan Wang, earning the trust of teachers, families, and students alike. When Principal Wang retired in 2023, LAUSD appointed Ms. Garmon as her successor for a two-year probationary term.
Unprecedented Scrutiny
Just six weeks into her principalship, a discrimination complaint triggered a Uniform Complaint Procedure (UCP) investigation. As a result, LAUSD imposed unusually strict oversight, limiting her decision-making authority and requiring all actions to be pre-approved by the District.
Despite these challenges, Principal Garmon remained professional, collaborative, and committed to every student and program.
The oversight included:
A directive to reassign instructional aides only after a data-based academic needs analysis, vetted and signed off by a District official.
There are strict rules regarding how she may accept parent donations, requiring equal distribution between programs despite their different needs.
Constant coordination with LAUSD regional administrators on every operational detail.
Every decision made this year was guided and approved by LAUSD.
A Misguided Decision
Now, the District is choosing to terminate Principal Garmon, dashing the career of a qualified, long-standing leader. Under LAUSD policy, principals let go during probationary periods are ineligible to serve as principals elsewhere in the District.
This is not accountability. This is scapegoating.
Rather than address ongoing issues like enrollment, funding, and program equity, LAUSD is using Principal Garmon as a distraction. Replacing her will not solve these systemic challenges. It will only bring further instability.
Why This Matters
Principal Garmon knows Broadway. No one else understands the school’s dual-language structure, history, or complexities better.
She has bridged divides. Despite intense pressure, she has worked tirelessly to support both programs with care and fairness.
She is respected. Among staff, parents, and community members, her integrity, professionalism, and presence have been a steady force.
Removing her now risks plunging our school into greater uncertainty—and sends the wrong message to those who have dedicated their careers to our children.
Speak out. Show up. Be heard.
Let LAUSD know that we support Principal Garmon—and that we will not be silent while they undermine our school.
