Top-Performing Dual-Language School Faces LAUSD Neglect and Leadership Disruption

SUBHEADLINE:

Parents, Teachers, and Students Protest District’s Sudden Removal of Beloved Broadway Elementary Principal

VENICE, CA – Sunday, June 15, 2025 — Parents, teachers, and students at Broadway Elementary School—one of LAUSD’s highest-performing and most sought-after dual-language magnet programs—are reeling from the district’s abrupt and unexplained removal of Principal Rachelle Garmon. The decision has sent shockwaves through the community and ignited widespread outrage.

Broadway is a model of academic achievement, cultural inclusion, and bilingual excellence. Its Mandarin and Spanish immersion programs consistently draw families from across Los Angeles. But despite the school’s proven success, the district’s actions suggest a pattern of neglect, mismanagement, and disruption at the highest level.

“This isn’t just about a principal—it’s about a school being set up to fail,” said Brooke Hanson, parent of a second grader. “Broadway is thriving because of our community’s commitment, and LAUSD keeps undermining that.”

Over the past year alone, LAUSD has:

  • Placed an uncredentialed teacher in the 4th/5th grade Spanish Immersion classroom

  • Failed to open a promised 4th grade Mandarin Immersion class, despite strong enrollment demand

  • Sent LAUSD staff (including Kamau Bobb) to the Friends of Broadway Elementary School (FOBES) board meeting without informing the principal or providing context

  • Abruptly shut down a critical LMU scholarship pipeline designed to grow bilingual teacher talent—an initiative LAUSD previously claimed to prioritize

  • Mishandled a Uniform Complaint Process (UCP) investigation regarding hiring practices and interview procedures

  • Left the Mandarin Immersion curriculum untouched since 2010, despite significant changes in standards and language education best practices

Principal Garmon’s removal—executed without warning, explanation, or community input—has galvanized families, teachers, and supporters citywide.

To date, over 1,107 community members have signed a Change.org petition, and Teamsters Local 2010 has sent 1,113 letters demanding answers and immediate action from the district.

The Broadway community is calling on LAUSD to:

  • Reinstate Principal Garmon immediately

  • Publicly explain the justification for her removal

  • Commit to transparent, inclusive, and equitable decision-making moving forward

“Principal Garmon stepped up in a time of uncertainty and began repairing years of damage caused by district neglect,” said parent Dee Wilson. “Her removal feels like a punishment for doing the right thing.”
